Leicestershire Police are trying to trace a motorist who drove into a cyclist on Upperton Road in Leicester in the early hours of Wednesday morning. CCTV footage shows that as the cyclist lay strewn in the road, the driver reversed and fled the scene.
The BBC reports that the incident took place at the junction of Fosse Road South and Upperton Road at 4.16am with the cyclist appearing to have ignored a red light as she crossed.
Footage from another angle, published on the Leicester Mercury website, shows the car slowing for a red light before accelerating when it turns green.
Witnesses said that the victim did not appear to have lights on her bike.
She was taken to hospital, but has since told the owners of Snutch News – who came to her aid – that she was lucky as her head fell on her “lucky rucksack.”
Subhash Varambhia, added: “The driver stopped for a few seconds, but then reversed and drove away. How could you do that? How could you leave someone like that?
“The driver didn’t even get out of the car to see if she was alive. The woman was lying in the road and screaming in pain. Neighbours came out to help her and someone called an ambulance. The woman was clearly in a lot of pain. Any movement seemed to hurt her.”
A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.27am to a report of a collision. Officers attended and the woman was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary as a precaution. Inquiries are being carried out to find the vehicle, which did not stop.”
